France, World War One. A young British officer has been found dead in his dugout in the trenches on the Western Front, bludgeoned to death in a brutal and violent attack. There are no leads and no suspects – his is just another body to add to the many thousands of casualties in this bloody war. Inspector Blackstone thought he was done with the army, but the dead officer’s grandfather – a General who Blackstone knows from his time serving in India and Afghanistan – requests that he goes to the French front line to solve the crime. Surrounded by young men over half his age, Blackstone must face the horror of modern warfare, and the prejudices of the officer class, if he is to gain justice for the murdered man.
